Homemade Wind Turbine

It was some time ago when my family decided to become independent of the commercial electric grid. Initially, we had considered buying a factory built 1000 watt wind turbine and having it professionally installed. When we realized that it would cost our family over $3000 and that we would be required to set it up ourselves, it became critical that we learn as much as we could about how to build a homemade wind turbine. We didn't have much money to spend on the project, so home built wind turbines were our only option.

When we began discussing our plans with friends and neighbors, we realized that many middle class homeowners found themselves in the same situation, so we put together this article to help those that wish to learn how to make a homemade wind turbine.

We had already installed a system of solar panels which was saving us some money, but the system was not large enough to supply all of our home's electrical power needs. We conducted an informal study of our electical usage and determined what size wind turbine system we would need to supply our family, having three children, with adequate electrical power. We estimated that the system that we needed would have to provide at least 1000 watts of power, and would have to be mounted on a 40-foot tower. The question was, "Could we build it ourselves?"

Our first hurdle was to find a good building plan and a reliable step-by-step guide telling how to build a homemade wind turbine. Most of the plans we looked at seemed to be quire complicated, and required the skills of a certified welder. Without an easily understandable plan for a simple to build, low cost wind turbine, we were doomed to failure. Finally, we decided to design our own system. We created our own plans.

It took my family over a decade to build and install our homemade wind turbine. Our goal was to build the turbine with simple tools using materials and components that were inexpensive. This was no easy task. It seemed as though most vendors of systems, kits, or parts preferred to make a wind turbine building project difficult, in order to keep the buisiness for themselves and the professional installers. After all, they are not going to make a lot of money when homeowners begin learning how to make a homemade wind turbine.
