How To Build Wind Turbine and Reduce electric bill each month

Tag:BuildASmallWindTurbine | Build A Small Wind Turbine

More and more homeowners, burdened by the unrelenting increases in daily living costs, are beginning to consider alternate renewable energy sources for their homes. Those homeowners who live in areas that have the advantage of suitable prevailing wind speeds, are being drawn to the advantages of renewable green power, and are deciding to build their own wind turbine. Some of these advantages include cost saving Federal and State tax breaks, significantly lower utility bills, benefits to the environment, and ease of use.

Most homeowners build wind turbines of small to moderate size, large enough to provide only a portion of the home's power needs. Those who have larger commercial grade systems may generate enough power to end up with excess power that can be transferred back into the power grid at a profit.

If you are fortunate enough have no financial limitations, you can have a commercially manufactured wind turbine built and installed by professionals. Expect to pay thousands of dollars for such an installation; the cost of which might take decades to amortize. If you need to economize on the initial installation costs, you might consider learning how to build a wind turbine by using a commercially available kit, or building a system from scratch. If you are handy with basic hand tools, have the needed materials, and some free time you can easily do it yourself.

It's basically a matter of following the simple process outlined in the steps given below:

1. Acquire a DC motor to use for a generator. Ametek motors are excellent for this purpose. DC motors can be found at local salvage yards or on the Internet.

2. Construct a hub. Aluminum is an excellent material. It's light weight and easily machined. What is needed is a lathe-cut round with a hole down the middle of a size to accept the DC motor's axle.

3. Mount the hub to the motor axle by welding, and drill holes for mounting the turbine blades.

4. Create the turbine blades. Many materials can be used. Plastic or PVC pipe is often used successfully. Ensure that the finished and assembled blades will be angled into the wind for turning the generator.

5. Construct a tower for mounting the turbine. Two- to three-inch aluminum is an excellent choice. The higher the tower, the more wind will be prevalent, and the more efficiency will be realized. Twelve feet should be a minimum height.

6. Make all the needed electrical connections and dress the wires down the side of the tower, and hook them up to the controllers and batteries that will convert and store the elecrical charge generated by you generator.

Once you build a wind turbine and have it up and running, you'll begin generating power for your home at no cost, and will begin to enjoy a noticeable reduction in your monthly electric bill.
