Make Residential Wind Power Systems and Save Your Money

Tag:ResidentialWindPower | Residential Wind Power

Residential wind power systems are a Godsend for those homeowners who are trying to break free from the ever increasing cost of power purchased from the commercial electric power grid. Wind power is an especially attractive option for those who live in remote locations, and currently depend upon diesel generators for most of their home's electrical power needs. If you happen to live in such an area where there is adequate average wind speeds, you can enjoy free residential wind power from this inexhaustible power source. Simple residential wind power systems can produce around 50 kilowatts. With enough space for installation, this output can be multiplied by installing multiple wind generators.

Wind is an excellent source of power for generating electricity. A small wind generator, one with a rotor diameter of about six feet, can be easily installed near your home, perhaps on the roof. This wind generator will be mechanically rotated by the wind. The turning rotor will operate a generator that will put out DC electric current. Residential wind power is quickly becoming a popular and inexpensive source of electric power for the home.

If you have a well that requires pumping to bring the water to your home, using a mechanical power hookup between a windmill and the pump is an excellent way to pump water without relying upon the electric company. Residential wind power has been used in this manner for centuries. The principles of operation are the same, but the technology and wind generators are more efficient. Wind generators that are dedicated specifically to pumping water require a medium sized rotor mounted on a tower and installed over the well from which the water is pumped. A mechanical power train of belts or chains, and piping will move large quantities of water which can be used directly or stored for future use.

Some homeowners have installed residential wind power systems that are large enough to supply all of their personal electric power needs plus a bit extra that can be sold back through the power grid to the electric company. Your system can not only reduce the cost of electricity for your home, it can even make you a profit.

The only measurable expense for operating a residential wind power system is the initial cost of installation. Once the system is installed and operating, you can forget about buying electrical power, or generating it using a diesel generator that requires expensive fossil fuel. In addition to generating your own electricity, you'll be making a major contribution to reducing the harmful effects of burning fossil fuels.

Residential wind power systems can be purchased or constructed in a wide range of sizes with varying electrical output capacities. Some older systems designs were a bit noisy, and had to be located some distance from the home. Modern, well engineered units are designed to be less noisy, the only sounds that your will hear are the wind saving you money.
